Dr. Najeeb M. Saleeby (1870-1935) was born in Syria. He studied medicine at the American University of Beirut, moved to America and eventually became a naturalized US citizen. He worked in Sulu and Mindanao as the superintendent of schools.
He was an Arab Christian who lived among Moros and had extensive interaction with them; He studied their language, culture, law, history and religion. He translated many Moro Jawi manuscripts and Tarsilas, and authored several authoritative books about the Muslims in Sulu and Mindanao.
